Before I can solo I need to get the “Engine Failure After Take Off” fixed in my mind with a few practices …

  1. Pitch for safe speed …. #1 Fly the Aeroplane
    1. as you will already be climing at Vx or Vy you will lose speed quickly so it’s important to push the nose down to maintain speed and not stall the aircraft.
  2. Pick a field to land in!
    1. Less than 1000ft and you should not turn back (the impossible turn) … most likely you will loose height too quickly and not make the field. Much safer to pick a field in a 30 degree arc and make a coordinated, controlled approach
  3. Flaps
    1. Consider flaps, do you need them yet or delay until the field is made
  4. If there is time consider a mayday call to get help
  5. Secure the engine
    1. You don’t want a “heavy” landing and for the fuel pump to be spraying fuel over live electrics! Start on the left and sweep across …
      1. fuel off
      2. mags off
      3. master off
